Danny O’Flaherty
is
an internationally known artist. From his boyhood home in the furthest reaches
of the Irish west to the steps of the United States Capital, where he performed
before a crowd of half a million people, Danny has entertained audiences large
and small with his rousing interpretation of his music. Singer, song-writer,
versatile instrumentalist, story-teller, and bard, he evokes the often
indistinguishable link between history and myth.
Living traditional
Celtic music which has always been part of his life
Whether singing
the timeless songs of the Galway fisherman or performing his own ballads, he
keeps a unique heritage alive, captivates his audiences with his talent and
includes his audiences as part of each performance. He’s played at the Inaugural
Ball for President Reagan, at the National Cathedral for Pope John Paul II,
with the
Baton Rouge Philharmonic and Tulsa Philharmonic.
He’s sung at the Pan Celtic Festival in Ireland and was invited to perform for
Israel President Chaim Herzog.
Dedicating himself
to preserving and promoting Celtic culture
Besides being a
talented musician, Danny started the Celtic Nations Heritage Festival
organization whose goal is to bring together and preserve the culture of the
seven Celtic Nations. The annual festival is held in Louisiana.
One of his
favorite projects is the Currach Regatta, which he helped introduce to New
Orleans. He organized it for promotion, competition and travels to Galway, with
the assistance of Mr. Michael Loftus, the chair of the Currach Committee World
Cup.
Gaelic being
Danny’s first language offers him a unique opportunity that most Irish
entertainers don’t have. . . .he speaks, he sings, and he teaches in Gaelic.
About 13 years
ago, Danny created his “Celtic Christmas” show which is still going strong.
It’s a combination that includes rarely-heard traditional songs performed with a
blend of vocal and musical talents. With a vast repertoire ranging from
original ballads to hand-clapping rhythms, this music is “a living art form,
from the heart and soul.” Perhaps the Washington Star newspaper said it
best . . .”some of the best arrangements, music and singing you’ll ever hear . .
.”
